Description
Wharfedale EVO 5.4 Floorstanding Speakers (Pair)
The Wharfedale EVO 5.4 floor-standing Speakers feature two 6-inch Kevlar woofers alongside the EVO 5 AMT tweeter in a taller, wider cabinet. Computer-modelled spot bracing and sandwich-engineered walls eliminate colouration while the SLPP port delivers thunderous bass that remains controlled. When only full-range power and precision will do, the 5.4 offers flagship-level performance at a fraction of the price.
The EVO 5 builds on the success of the EVO 4, which received great reviews and became one of Wharfedale’s top-selling products. The EVO 5 introduces several key upgrades, including a larger AMT tweeter, a tri-directional SLPP bass port, improved Kevlar woofers with elastomer damping, and a sturdier, multi-layer real-wood cabinet featuring precision spot bracing. Co-developed with the Elysian series, the EVO 5 retains the natural and musical British sound while offering deeper bass, more precise sound, and reduced distortion—all at an affordable price.
High-End Sound, Everyday Price
The EVO 5 is the next evolution in affordable audiophile-grade speakers. It shares advanced technology, accurate sound, and high-quality construction with Wharfedale’s Elysian series, along with specific enhancements, yet remains easily accessible. The classic British sound—natural, musical, and appealing—stands out with precise details that rival those of speakers costing much more.
Precision AMT Tweeter
EVO 5’s Air Motion Transformer tweeter features an expanded 35 × 70 mm pleated diaphragm driven by precision magnets, now enhanced with acoustic damping and an elastomer frame. The result is faster transients, wider dispersion, and ultra-low distortion—delivering crisp, extended treble without harshness or fatigue.
The AMT unit developed for EVO 5 is larger than the EVO 4 equivalent – 35x70mm compared to 30x60mm – which further improves efficiency and dispersion. It also features a new sound-absorbing material that Wharfedale calls SilentWeave™ – developed for the EVO 5 Series, this cotton/felt hybrid is added to the cavity behind the diaphragm to reduce soundwave reflections inside the speaker.
All the EVO 5 drive units benefit from a new acoustic damping frame called ResoFrame™, made from elastomer and visible as a cog-like shape within the driver’s front panel. In the case of the AMT, an additional elastomer damping gasket between the diaphragm and the front plate further reduces mechanical resonances. It smooths the response, especially in the critical lower treble band.
These acoustic enhancements to the AMT unit minimise unwanted sound colouration, ensuring crisply extended treble without a hint of harshness and a purer, more natural sonic signature.
A Distinctive Approach to High Frequencies
AMT Tweeter for Precision and Detail: In developing the new EVO 5 series, Wharfedale has further evolved the cutting-edge Air Motion Transformer (AMT). The AMT is a type of high-frequency driver used in speakers, known for its exceptional accuracy, speed, and low distortion compared to traditional dome treble units.
Instead of using a conventional dome or cone to push air forward, an AMT uses a pleated diaphragm made of an ultra-thin, lightweight material (often a polymer film). Strong magnets are positioned on either side of the diaphragm, creating a powerful magnetic field. When an audio signal is passed through the conductive traces, the diaphragm is energised, causing the pleats to contract and expand. As the pleats move, they “squeeze” and “expand” the air between them, pushing it out in a highly controlled and efficient manner. This method allows the AMT to move four times more air than a traditional dome tweeter of the same surface area, leading to lower distortion (since the diaphragm moves less than a typical dome or ribbon), faster transient response (due to the lightweight material and minimal movement), wider frequency range, and better dispersion.
Controlled Kevlar Bass Drivers
Building on Elysian’s low-distortion motor system, EVO 5 woofers use woven Kevlar cones (130 mm or 150 mm, depending on model) with low-loss rubber surrounds and rear elastomer damping. The stiff, well-damped cones ensure ideal piston motion and a seamless blend with the midrange, producing bass that’s weighty, articulate, and true to the music.
Refined SLPP Bass Port
Wharfedale’s Slot Loaded Profiled Port (SLPP) is now a tri-directional design, venting rear radiation left, right, and rear through flared, semi-parabolic flanges. By equalising high internal pressure to room pressure without turbulence, EVO 5 delivers deep, articulate bass free from port noise, and is far less sensitive to placement.
Resonance-Free Real-Wood Cabinets
EVO 5 cabinets employ a sandwich of high-loss chipboard between stiff MDF layers to cancel resonances, aided by computer-modelled spot bracing that ties opposite walls.
Clean Connections
A single set of high-quality 5-way binding posts provides a secure and reliable connection, keeping cables neatly organised. Straight terminals simplify hookup and ensure a tidy, uncluttered appearance behind your speakers.
Seamless Home Cinema Integration
For a complete surround system, EVO 5 models share tweeters, driver cones, and crossover topology across the range. The matched tonal balance ensures coherent imaging and consistent performance in every channel—so your home cinema sounds as refined as your stereo system.
